Handmade Bricks for Lauderdale Mansions South Restoration in London

Lauderdale Mansions South in Maida Vale, London, has undergone significant restoration work using handmade bricks supplied by Sussex Handmade Brick.

Built in 1897, Lauderdale Mansions South was among the first mansion flat developments constructed for the middle classes during the expansion of Maida Vale in the late Victorian and Edwardian period. Today, the building is divided into 15 blocks, each with its own entrance hall and apartments, arranged around a 1.5-acre communal garden.

The historic brickwork and stonework required careful restoration to retain the architectural character and integrity of the original façade. Sussex Handmade Brick worked closely with restoration specialists Listed Building Restoration, supplying our Waverley Orange handmade bricks in a gauged format for use across the project.

The restoration incorporated traditional tuck pointing techniques, requiring tightly gauged brickwork and close attention to the proportions and appearance of the existing masonry. Deteriorated mortar and damaged bricks were carefully removed and replaced using colour-matched mortar and new handmade bricks selected to sit sympathetically alongside the original fabric.

The natural colour and handmade character of Waverley Orange helped the replacement brickwork blend with the surrounding façade while supporting the fine joints and detailing associated with the period property.

The project demonstrates how carefully selected handmade bricks can support sensitive restoration work on historic buildings. Made using traditional processes, Sussex Handmade Brick products provide the natural variation, texture and character required to complement existing masonry and preserve the architectural identity of period properties.
